The military has seized power in a coup in the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar and ousted President Andry Rajoelina, who has fled the country.

Army Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s new president on Friday, cementing his hold on power after a military takeover.

Randrianirina said earlier that the military had taken power and dissolved all institutions except the lower house of parliament, or National Assembly.
